Opportunities

Our office facilitates numerous opportunities for students, faculty and staff to participate and volunteer in education, research and engagement initiatives. Whether it’s taking part in a global health elective or volunteering to support a community initiative, our opportunities help participants gain real world experience that promotes empathy for and understanding of individuals in need in the community.

Please note: due to the COVID-19 global pandemic and current travel restrictions, some of our opportunities have been postponed or modified until further notice. Please click on each opportunity below for details.

Indigenous Health opportunities

Through this program, a group of Elders visit the medical school on a rotating schedule and engage in meetings with students, faculty, and staff, provide teachings and workshops, strengthen protocol at events and ceremonies, and build relationships with students.

Please note: due to COVID-19, programming has been modified to an online platform. Please contact the Indigenous Health Program Coordinator for more details.

Local Health opportunities

RISE for Health, formerly Immigrant Youth and Health initiative, offers UCalgary students the opportunity to learn from and co-create community health programs with immigrant youth. Together, students and youth plan and execute youth health learning activities geared towards immigrant and refugee communities in Calgary, and build health leadership capacity of youth within these communities.

Global Health opportunities

Please note: the 2021 Global Health Electives, Field School and IIMEL have been postponed until further notice due to travel restrictions because of COVID-19. We will provide updates as this situation evolves. Please contact us if you have any questions.

Global health experiences provide students with unique opportunities to see how the social determinants of health play a key role in patient health and health seeking behaviours. Clerkship and pre-clerkship opportunities are available for both Undergraduate Medical Education and Postgraduate Medical Education students.

Field schools and research experiences offer University of Calgary students the opportunity for experiential learning about Global Health promotion, capacity building, and equity through a mix of classroom and field/research work in a Low and Middle Income Country (LMIC) country setting.
